Honestly, this request from a friend and former bridesmaid of mine is where the idea of my new consulting services was probably born. Laura was renovating her kitchen and working with her contractor to design the layout. She came to me, asking for a second opinion, especially for the corner area of the new space and the far wall that was now part of her kitchen after knocking down the old peninsula counter space.

The initial design Laura shared with me had one glaring problem :: the stove was too far away from the sink and refrigerator. She originally wanted to move it to eliminate the weird corner area and streamline the lower cabinets.

I convinced her of 4 things ::

  1. To leave the stove where it was - otherwise, while she would increase her daily step count, she may also be eating takeout more often as she burnt dinner running all over the kitchen.
  2. Instead of cabinets below the stove, place two large drawers there for pots and pans. The drawers would better maximize the space and allow easier access to the large, bulky items.
  3. Stop stressing about the lower corner and just let it be some wasted space. She thought she HAD to use the 12” of open space in the lower corner. I told her that utilizing that space would result in a less functional/accessible cabinet, causing daily frustration. Once she could let go of that one foot, she’d never think about it again.
  4. Not to force any cabinets on the far right wall since it would be too crowded. This space became the perfect spot for her new command center with a charging drawer right in front of the new acrylic calendar displaying the family's monthly activities, appointments, and events.

Check out Laura’s new kitchen now that the renovation is complete. She had a lot of amazing ideas on her own, but with the addition of our consulting services, she was able to get the kitchen of her dreams while feeling totally in control of the process and end result. Without reaching out to us, she would’ve wasted her money on a brand new kitchen that didn’t actually improve the space or her daily lifestyle. She avoided a recipe for disaster.

The funny part about the calendar is that when I first suggested it, Laura gave me a hard and fast ‘nope.’ A month later, I received a text from her that said, “Hey pal. I think an acrylic calendar for my kitchen wall is genius. It makes all the sense. I’m slowing learning not to doubt your ideas. LOL.” Of course, I screenshot this as collateral for future disagreements. You can view her mea culpa here.

“As soon as I showed my initial plans to Lisa and she provided her insight, she had my head spinning. She threw a wrench in my plans for the better. Lisa makes space make sense. It is always so ‘duh’ once she says what to do.”
